What is GATE all about? Is it important for engineering? If yes, why? What all topics are included in it?

Currently, I am in 11th (Science faculty) and want to become a software engineer. Do I need to write GATE after completing B.Tech from CSE?

Also on basis of GATE score card you get admission through CCMT to IIT, IIIT, etc. But remember, it is quite tough exam but has many advantages related to it.
