A PhD is a doctoral degree. PhD stands for Doctor of Philosophy. A PhD can be pursued by students who have completed a Master's degree and wish to gain in-depth knowledge of a niche subject. A candidate who completes this 3-6 year degree, is eligible for pursuing independent research and for pursuing academia. Generally, the candidates who complete a PhD are refered to as Doctors, to signify their in-depth knowledge of a subject.
