American Film Institute fellows are not traditional film school students. On average, they are in their late 20s and mid-30s, when they start training at AFI. In other words, they have lived and worked as Scientists, Composers, Army Captains, Journalists, Stand-Up comics, and more. International student population is 40% of the institute's student body. The institute offers only MFA programme in six academic disciplines.
