Division of Mechanical Sciences of IISc has very competitive cutoffs. The General CAT cut off of the GATE score in the Mechanical Engineering branch in *M.Tech* was approximately *665-690* in 2024. There are also PhD admissions which mandate that one should score high in GATE (approximately *650 in general*) after which one is subject to an interview. The 2024 cutoffs of *Bachelor of Science (Research)* programme were approximately: JEE Advanced *AIR 353*, NEET-UG *AIR 600*, and IAT rank *17-38* of General category, depending on the course or programme and the exam. The entry points of reserved classes are very low.

The GATE cutoff for admission into the Division of Mechanical Sciences is among the highest in the country. For general category candidates, it typically ranges from 700 to 850 out of 1000, depending on the stream and competition that year. It's a clear reflection of IISc's excellence and the intense competition to join. While numbers matter, the final selection often considers overall academic performance, motivation, and interview rounds in research-based programs. A holistic academic profile is key.
