According to the mechanical properties of fluids class 11 notes, solids have a definite size and shape. Solids resist both shear and compressive forces. However, fluids include both gases and liquids. They do not have a fixed shape and they take up the shape of the container, in which they are poured. Fluids cannot resist the shear stress and start flowing when even a small tangential force is applied to it. The fluids flow continuously till the force is applied and the solids undergo plastic deformation under force.
