What is the difference between MBA and PGDM? Which are the best institutes in India to pursue this course?

PGDM : PGDM expands to Post Graduate Diploma in Management, the confusion starts when you see the term Diploma. Many students are of the view that it is a Diploma course and not a Degree; you are right to an extent that it is a Diploma. The main reason why postgraduate courses are named as PGDM is because when an Institute is an autonomous body (meaning it is not affiliated to any University) and conducts management courses then such Institutes cannot offer MBA degree. Even IIMs, XLRI's doesn't offer MBA degrees they only give PGP Diploma or PGDM since they are autonomous and independent bodies. On similar lines AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) is allowing approved colleges to run a PGDM course. Some Business Schools offering this AICTE PGDM course need not be autonomous, the PGDM course will be autonomous given by the Institute & directly approved by AICTE, Ministry of HRD, Govt of India. MBA : A two year management degree expands to Master of Business Administration, only Universities can grant MBA degrees. It could be a recognized foreign university or an Indian University.

Hi, MBA and PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) are both management courses yet the only difference is the approach to its curriculum. MBA give more focus to the syllabus framed by the university and no change is bought in for years. As for PGDM the focus is more on the current industrial demands and requirements. The curriculum of PGDM gets slightly changed every year. The flexibility provided by PGDM is the key success factor of the course. MBA only provides degree to institutes associated to a university, while PGDM is not affiliated to any university and has its own syllabus. MBA is offered by universities and colleges affiliated to universities whereas an independent institution offer PGDM. While taking admission your emphasis should be more on taking admission in good universities or institutes. You may consider some of the below mentioned points while selecting a institute or university to pursue MBA or PGDM program: - Accreditation of the institute. - Institute's infrastructure. - Teaching faculty. - Specialization offered. - Past placements records. - Tuition fees. - City preference. - Industry interface. PGDM is post graduate diploma in management and MBA is Masters in Business Administration. You receive a degree certificate from the university under which you have compelted your MBA under AIU affiliation. Whereas, in PGDM, you received a diploma certification from the institute approved under AICTE/AIU affiliation. Comparatively, PGDM is better as the course is competitive, upgrdaded and prepares you to get ready for a real challenging job world. Wehereas, MBA course curriculum is conventional where upgradation of course is very rare depending upon the university guidelines.
