What is the difference between NDA and AFCAT?

The full form of AFCAT is Air Force Common Admission Test whereas the full form of NDA is National Defence Academy. Both exams are the sought-after defence entrance exams in the country. NDA exam is conducted by Union Public Service Commission to select candidates for admission to the Army, Navy and Air wings of NDA and Indian Naval Academy Courses. AFCAT exam is conducted to select candidates as Class 1 gazetted Officers in the flying branch and ground duty (Technical and Non-Technical) branches. NDA exam is conducted after Class 12 whereas AFCAT is conducted after graduation. The selection process of AFCAT comprises online test and AFSB interview. NDA selection process comprises written exam and SSB interview. Candidates after clearing NDA exam are required to first undergo training at the National Defence Academy after which they are sent to the respective defence academies as per their preferences for further training. Through AFCAT exam candidates are directly inducted into the Indian Air Force. There is also a difference in the exam pattern and syllabus of NDA and AFCAT. NDA exam pattern is such that it is divided into two papers-Maths and GAT. NDA exam is conducted offline and carries 900 marks. AFCAT exam pattern is such that it comprises several sections such as General Awareness, Verbal Ability in English Numerical Ability, Military Reasoning, and Aptitude test. Additionally, candidates who opt for the technical branch in AFCAT are required to appear for Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT). The total marks allotted to the AFCAT test are 300 whereas EKT 150 marks.

Through the AFCAT exam, an aspirant can join the Air Force flying branch, as a technician or in the ground duty branch as an officer. Male and female both candidates are eligible for the AFCAT exam. The AFCAT exam is conducted twice a year. NDA is an exam only male candidates can apply for. An aspirant can join any of the wings as per choice, merit, and vacancy. Here the candidate will get a Bachelor's degree in arts, Science, and humanities arts. Eligibility Criteria for AFCAT and NDA For AFCAT: Technical Branch: Students must have a minimum of 4 years of a degree from a recognised University or cleared Sections A and B examination of Associate Membership of Institution of Engineers or Aeronautical Society of India or Graduate membership examination of the Institute of ETE by actual studies. Students should have studied a min of 8 subjects. Flying Branch: Graduates in any discipline from a recognised University who have attained a min of 60% marks in aggregate in all papers put together and have passed Maths and Physics at 10+2 level or BE/B Tech degree from a recognised University with min 60% marks in aggregate in all papers put together. GDOC: Graduate Degree in any discipline with a min of 60%marks in aggregate of all papers put together or a PG Diploma or equivalent Diploma in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks in aggregate of all papers put together. For Education Branch, a PG Degree in any discipline with a min of 50% marks in aggregate of all papers put together. For NDA 10+2 passed with Maths and Physics for Air Force and for the Navy with 70%. For army 10+2 require from any stream with 70%. Age Criteria for AFCAT: Flying Branch: 20 to 24 years as of Jan 01, 2018, I. e. Born between Jan 02, 1994, to Jan 01, 1998. Technical Branch: 20 to 26 years as of Jan 01, 2018, I. e. born between Jan 02, 1992, to Jan 01, 1998. GDOC: 20 to 26 years as of Jan 01, 2018, I. e. born between Jan 02, 1992, to Jan 01, 1998. Age Criteria for NDA: Only unmarried male students born not earlier than July 02nd, 1999, and not later than July 01st, 2002 are eligible. Exam pattern for AFCAT and NDA: AFCAT: It of a single paper which comprises English GA, Maths and reasoning making a total of 100 questions to be done in 2 hours. CDS: Paper 1- Maths Duration 2.5 hours, Marks-300 Paper 2- General Ability Test, Duration 2.5 hours, Marks 600 General Ability Test: Part A- English 200 marks Part B- General Knowledge: 400.
