NIT is 'National Institute of Technology' while IIT is 'Indian Institute of Technology'. For admission to former you have to clear JEE Mains and for later JEE Advanced after Mains!!

IITs stands for Indian Institute of Technology, NITs for National Institute of Technology. Both colleges are good, but IITs are better than NITs and harder to get into. If you are from IIT, you will get better faculty, better exposure and also the tag of IIT gives you an awesome placement.
