Mechanical is one of the base branches of engineering. Production engineering is a more lighter version of the mechanical engineering with more onus on the softer aspects.
Although production engineering and mechanical engineering come under engineering, both are entirely different. Production engineering is the study of manufacturing technology with management science whereas mechanical engineering is concerned with mechanical systems, thermodynamics, kinematics and energy and related fields.

Dear, production engineering is a part of mechanical engineering. If you want to go in manufacturing industries & want to be a specialist in production then you can do the your B.Tech course in production engineering. In mechanical, you can learn about all the energy subjects like thermodynamics, refrigeration and air conditioning, fluid mechanics internal combustion engine and some part of production engineering.
