The MSc programme in wildlife biology and conservation aims to produce well-trained biologists and conservation practitioners who will retain their passion for wild places and a sense of purpose to try and conserve them. NCBS provides to its students a strong foundation of science that will help them design, implement and monitor a range of ecological studies and conservation projects.
Eligibility: - Indian applicants with a Bachelors degree in any discipline (including those in the final year of graduation) with a minimum of 60% marks in the core subjects are eligible to apply. Central, South and Southeast Asian nationals with similar qualifications are also eligible to apply.
The Masters program is offered once every two years (in even years). Admission to the program is advertised in August-September of the year before the start of the course. Students are selected based on a written test, a detailed application, referee letters and an interview of short-listed candidates. The written test may assess general knowledge, aptitude, English language skills, analytical and quantitative abilities and knowledge of basic biology, ecology and conservation issues. This test is conducted in over 30 centers across India, including most state capitals, in early December.
The syllabus for this course is as under:-
1. Semester I - August to December ( Introduction to R, Basic Mathematics, Philosophy of Science , Basic Ecology, Basic Statistics, Evolution and Bio geography, Vertebrate Biology, GIS and Remote Sensing, Science Communication and Invertebrate Biology).
2. Semester II - January - May (Conservation Ecology and Practice, Advanced Statistics, Community Ecology, Marine Ecology, Advanced course in Population Ecology and Estimation and Behavioral Ecology).
3. Semester III - July to December (Ecological History and Conservation Laws and Policies and Management)
4. Semester IV - January - May: Dissertation field work
Elective courses: - Conservation Genetics, Freshwater and Wetland Ecology and Landscape Ecology.
