Merchant bankers, or investment bankers as they are commonly known, work for investment banks and provide a range of financial services for their clients.
They oversee financial opportunities for their clients, advising on such things as mergers and acquisitions, lending, privatizations, the identification and securing of new deals and helping with initial public offerings.
*To become an investment banker, a bachelor's degree in business administration or related field like finance is required. There are a huge number of specializations available with a MBA degree including MBA in marketing and finance.

Hello Nidhi, Investment Banking is a very exciting but a difficult career path. With high pay and enormous bonus comes a very hectic work schedule where you will have to put in 14 hours of work a day and sometimes even more. It also requires strong numerical understanding and an eye to detail. To become a successful investment Banker you need to have a sound numerical and financial knowledge. Working on software platforms like Excel, PowerPoint etc is a prerequisite.

Investment banker is a fancy term given to those banking officials who handle investment in shares and mutual funds of corporate, government and HNI( High Net worth Individual). It requires deep understanding of finance and share market. Except top MNC banks like City Bank, HSBC, Merrill Lynch etc, no private or PSU bank hire Investment banker directly.
