What is the eligibility criteria to become an Investment Banker?

Hi, Merchant bankers, or investment bankers as they are commonly known, work for investment banks and provide a range of financial services for their clients. They oversee financial opportunities for their clients, advising on such things as mergers and acquisitions, lending, privatizations, the identification and securing of new deals and helping with initial public offerings. *To become an investment banker, a bachelor’s degree in business administration or related field like finance is required. There are a huge number of specializations available with a MBA degree including MBA in marketing and finance. Hello Nidhi, Investment Banking is a very exciting but a difficult career path. With high pay and enormous bonus comes a very hectic work schedule where you will have to put in 14 hours of work a day and sometimes even more. It also requires strong numerical understanding and an eye to detail. To become a successful investment Banker you need to have a sound numerical and financial knowledge. Working on software platforms like Excel, PowerPoint etc is a prerequisite. Generally there are no specific qualifications to become an investment banker. But to get into the domain recruiters look for people from CA or MBA or Engineering background with high academic achievements and aptitude. They usually prefer rank holder CA's/ IIM's/ IIT's. Investment banker is a fancy term given to those banking officials who handle investment in shares and mutual funds of corporate, government and HNI( High Net worth Individual). It requires deep understanding of finance and share market. Except top MNC banks like City Bank, HSBC, Merrill Lynch etc, no private or PSU bank hire Investment banker directly. Only those officers who have proved themselves during the service are given this responsibilities. The top MNC banks take MBAs from IIMs for these posts.

Hi, Investment bankers identify joint venture partners, define acquisition strategy, structure and enter into joint venture agreements and successfully execute mergers and acquisitions (M&A). They also help to raise private equity capital. The art of investment banking lies in understanding the different nuances of each transaction and then tailoring your services based on your understanding of what your clients are trying to accomplish within the context of their organisation and industry and where they actually stand — much of which comes from experience. Investment bankers are thoroughly conversant with the accounting, financial and legal issues that impact business. They also have a good understanding of all business facets. Although a CA is equally qualified for the job, a person having both BBA & MBA with specialization in finance from a good B-school is what companies look at the entry level.A stint at a real job in a big industrial enterprise would also help, especially if you intend to become a so-called industry specialist. It also helps to have at least a notional understanding of the business you are trying to finance, buy, sell, or restructure.There are pros and cons to following the investment banking track. Most investment bankers feel that though the downside in terms of doing menial work at times for hours and hours cannot be exaggerated, the rigors of the i-banking analyst programme are part and parcel of ‘paying dues’. This essentially means that by investing two years of your youth where your life is not yours and you are on-call 24/7, you are networking for the future by interacting on a daily basis with people in the league of company CEO's. These people prove to be good connections in the future. Client exposure has always been a big selling point for young 20-somethings to enter analyst programmes.
