Hi,
Scholarships are awarded on various criteria. The norms vary for different universities and programs.
Generally they are as followed:-
Merit scholarships: On the basis of overall academic achievement.
Need-Based Scholarships: Designed to fund the less-fortunate students in their academic pursuits.
Athletic Scholarships: Given to star athletes by some universities to recruit them for the athletic teams.
School-Based Individual Scholarships: Specific scholarships relevant to the university.
Full/Partial Scholarship : Most times students are given partial scholarships which normally cover simply living, simply books, or part of the tuition

Here are some scholarships offered by IIMs to help a student with excellent academic background:
1) IIM-A: One of the top management institutes in the Asia Pacific region provides a Need based scholarship to economically weak students in their PGP and PGP-ABM courses. The scholarship amount is decided on the basis of annual gross family income, parental asset ownership, number of dependents etc. Application for same can be made in the month of July. 1) IIM-A: One of the top management institutes in the Asia Pacific region provides a Need based scholarship to economically weak students in their PGP and PGP-ABM courses. The scholarship amount is decided on the basis of annual gross family income, parental asset ownership, number of dependents etc. Application for same can be made in the month of July. Apart from this, IIM A has also instituted income-linked fee waiver scheme to help students on economic grounds.
2) IIM-B: When it comes to scholarships, this prestigious institute, tops in it. They offer 9 scholarships to talented cum meritorious students who have a desire to become global managers someday.
Aditya Birla Scholarship, Uday Nayak Scholarship , T Thomas Scholarship, OPJEMS Scholarship, and many more such scholarships are offered by this institute. Every scholarship has a different criteria and a separate sum to offer.
Apart from this, IIM-B also offers upto 5 (five) scholarships of Rupees five lakhs each for its Executive Post Graduate Programme (EPGP) students. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of the performance in the first two terms. The number of scholarships awarded in a given year is solely at the discretion of IIMB.
3) IIM-C: IIM branch of Calcutta is not behind when it comes to offering scholarships. They believe in providing assistance to any student who wishes to learn further. They also offer Need based scholarship similar to IIM-A.
Students who apply for this scholarship are expected to have a gross family income of Rs. 5 lakh or below in the previous financial year.
4) IIM-L: IIM Lucknow has instituted scholarships for up to 15% of the student intake based on merit and family income. Any student, including those belonging to the reserved category, whose total annual family income does not exceed Rs.1,50,000/- is eligible for consideration of these scholarships. The scholarship covers the Tuition fee component of the total fees charged by the Institute in the year awarded, and is subject to maintaining the stipulated standards of academic performance.
Besides this, IIM-L also has Industry Sponsored Scholarships: There are several industry sponsored scholarships available which are awarded at the end of each academic year based on merit. The value of these scholarships presently ranges fromRs.6,000/- to Rs.100,000/- per annum.
