    The UPSC exam pattern for the Mains stage consists of 9 papers conducted over 5 to 7 days. Only those candidates who secure at least the declared cut off in General Studies I and 33% in General Studies II in Prelims will be allowed to appear for the Mains Examination. The 9 papers in IAS Exam (Mains) are as follows: Paper A (Compulsory Indian Language); Paper B English which are qualifying in nature, while the other papers like Essay, General Studies Papers I, II, III, and IV, and Optional Papers I and II are considered for the final ranking.     The format of the IAS main stage exam is as follows:
    1. There are a total of nine papers in this stage.
    2. The qualifying and merit-ranking papers make up the two categories of the main exam.
    3. English or language papers are qualifying in nature with 300 marks each.
    4. The seven remaining papers are counted for merit in the final ranking.
    5. There are two optional papers based on your preference on the registration form.
    6. The rest of the five papers, which are essays, and the four GS papers are common to all.
    7. You have three hours to attempt each question paper.
    8. Each paper is worth 250 marks, which are tallied in the final rank
