The IIT JAM exam is conducted in computer-based test (CBT) mode. This means that the exam is taken on a computer, and the questions and answers are displayed on the screen. Candidates use a mouse or keyboard to select their answers.

The JAM exam will be held in 2 sessions throughout the day, and candidates are assigned to a specific session during registration. The exam is two hours long and consists of 60 questions of multiple-choice, multiple select and numaerical answer type questions.
