Some of the most useful and the easiest languages to learn after learning English will depend on Foreign Service Institute's (FSI) difficulty level. The Category I of FSI's are languages that are closely related to English. On average, it takes 24-30 weeks or 600-750 class hours to learn these Ctaegory I languages with full proficiency. Some of these FSI's Category I languages are as follows:

    • Afrikaans
    • Danish
    • Dutch
    • French
    • Italian
    • Norwegian
    • Portuguese
    • Romanian
    • Spanish
    • Swedish
