What is the new TOEFL iBT scoring system from 2026?
From January 21, 2026, the TOEFL iBT test will use a new score scale from 1 to 6, instead of 0 to 120. Each section – Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing – will get a score between 1.0 to 6.0, including half scores like 4.5 or 5.5. Your overall score will be the average of the 4 sections.

Yes! Scores stay valid for 2 years. For a transition period (2026–2028), your score report will show both the new 1.0–6.0 band and a comparable 0–120 score. This helps universities compare your results fairly during the switch.

TOEFL 2025 exam duration was about 2 hours. In the 2026 update the total time is cut to around 90 minutes. This is because the Reading and Listening sections are now adaptive, making the test faster and more personalized.
