For VIT Chennai, the no. of students who sat for placements were around 200 (maybe a little more). The number of core companies which came for placements in 2016 are as follows:
    L&T
    Godrej
    Vedanta
    Shapoorji pallonji
The no. of students recruited by each were 23, 7, 1, 2 respectively. The exact data can be seen at their official website. I would recommend you to prepare for government jobs as they have higher package, respectable positions and most important job security.
All the best for your future.

The placement of the civil department is not good, people from civil department are mostly placed in mass recruitment or consultancy services.
I won't suggest you to take VIT, Chennai if you want placement in the civil department. But if you prefer doing higher study then you can take.
