Your background never makes a difference in getting admission to any college. An important element is getting the right score and then having the confidence to crack an interview. Your percentage of boards and graduation help you. But that doesn't mean that you can't get an admission.
For preparing for XAT, one year of hard work is enough.

I have friends in XLRI who come from very remote parts and they are exceptionally sound and intelligent. So I don't think your background will be a big barrier for you. Rather you have a story to tell and the faculty here will be eager to take you based on your background if you have the skills. For preparation, just be thorough with all the concepts that come in the XAT exam. In addition, be regular with your preparation and never leave it midway. Also, give as many mock tests as possible because it gets you in the zone. The right time to start preparing depends on your personal calibre. However, 8-9 months is sufficient time to prepa

The overall score for admission into XLRI takes into account your XAT score, 10th, 12th marks, graduation marks, GDPI scores, essay and GK marks. As long as you get good marks in these components, you will not face any issue in getting an admission here. As far as preparations are concerned, you should practice as many questions as you can, focus on decision making type of questions as these are not there in CAT. Right time to start preparing varies from person to person. Ideally, 3 months should be enough.

As long as you do well in XAT and then in GD-PI, your background will not be a problem. If you fulfil the eligibility criteria, you have all the chances to get into a good college.
The right time to start the preparation is the 3rd year of your engineering. You can either join a coaching institute or rely upon your self-study.

If you want to prepare for XAT then it's the best time to prepare from now. You can join any coaching (like TIME) or study by reading the syllabus books for XAT. Search about its syllabus on internet. It's syllabus is similar to CAT. You must be fluent in English, data interpretation and analytical reasoning, logical mathematics. Improve these sections. There are many books available in the market for it and most important thing - believe in youself.
