Retirement age of marine engineers in most of the shipping companies is 60 years. In view of the general shortage of marine engineers, shipping companies are allowed to retain marine engineers on a selective basis up to 65 years with permission from approving authorities.

We can say 60 years -65 years. In fact, actually. There are no such criteria. It is completely personnel and demand on the industry. I have to say, mostly majority will stop sailing by 45 years -55 years. This is one high remuneration field after 45-55 year, a B.Tech marine engineer will be well settled and financially strong. Moreover, after gaining good experience as a chief engineer, they can also switch their career to off shore jobs.
