The best time to start preparing is during the second year of your graduation (third year for engineering students)
You can take CAT even after 12th grade but there is no point of doing so because the score of CAT is valid for just one year (unlike GMAT/GRE).
Since you can't do Post graduation (MBA) before completing Undergraduate studies, there is no point in taking CAT after 12th. But I agree that after 12th you will be my better at Math/Quantitative aptitude and better equipped to handle quant section in CAT.

    Good afternoon
You should start preparation for CAT from now itself.
You have good grades in 12th.
Thank you and all the best.

That is a lot of time to prepare for CAT. In fact, that is a lot of time to prepare for anything. That represents around 3% of your total lifetime.
Don't worry. Don't panic. I am not telling you to start attending classes or skimming through heaps of study material right now. Now is the time to do the fun bit of preparation.
    1. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses
Do numbers scare you? Has probability always been a bitch? Are the RC passages long and boring and put you to sleep? What about your reading speed? Is it 100 wpm or 200? Is it enough? Do words like factitious and proclivity confuse you?
Then start to work on them.
    2. Start read
