Ayurveda medicine finds its origin in vedic times and is based on the curative properties of herbs. Ayurveda has gained significant momentum as the World Health Organization has provided a world wide forum for promoting Alternative forms of healing. Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is graduate degree awarded after the study of five and a half years duration, including 1-year internship. The basic requirement for the eligibility to get the admission to BAMS programme is qualifying the 10+2 examination with good score. The candidate must have the physics, chemistry and biology in 12th class. The candidate should have to go through the different national and state level entrance examinations to seek admission in BAMS. BAMS graduates have following job opportunities: (a) Ayurvedic Medical Colleges (b) Ayurvedic Hospitals (c) General Hospitals with indigenous medicine department (d) Ayurvedic Clinics (e) Consulting in Private practice (f) Government Hospitals (g) Research BAMS doctors invariably use Dr prefix. As per Indian law and code of ethics of Central Council of Indian Medicine, BAMS graduates or postgraduates cannot use the prefix Dr. They are be called Ayurvedacharyas or Acharyas. Only if they have a Ph.D can they be called Doctor.
