What is the scope of fisheries?

Jobs opportunities exist in public and private sector, some of them might include career opportunities and entrepreneurial opportunities in Aquaculture (Farms and Hatcheries), Fish Processing Industries, Quality Control Labs Jobs in public sector include opportunities in state and central government departments through State Public Service Commissions or UPSC. Besides fisheries aspirants can become a Scientists in the Central Fisheries Institutes after they clear the ICAR - A.R.S. exam. Some banks seem to hire fisheries graduates as Agricultural Officers and Fisheries Officers. They serve as vital links between the bank and the customer for servicing and sanctioning of loans and other financial solutions.

Hi Gayathri, There is tremendous scope in every field. You should pursue a stream based on two things : - your career goal - the type of job you want to do Find below few job avenues open in the respective fields : 1) Fisheries Science : * After completing the course, you can find employment in the public sector organizations such as the fisheries department and the nationalized banks. Opportunities lie in government agencies, State Departments of Agriculture and organisations such as the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI). Recruitment to these institutions is through the State Public Service Commission. For those having good research skills, can find employment in organisations such as the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) and the National Fisheries Development Board as research assistant, biochemist, biologist, technicians, etc. In the state government sector, a fisheries graduate can apply for the post of Assistant Fisheries Development Officer (AFDO)/ Fisheries Extension Officer (FEO) and District Fisheries Development Officer. Various opportunities in Central government agencies are in Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Fisheries survey of India (FSI), NIO, WHO etc. They can also be employed as a field banks officer, managers in agriculture loan section in nationalized as well as private banks. Job prospects are also available in private sector in aquaculture farms, hatcheries and processing plants. Commercial fish farming, seed production and export of marine products and ornamental dishes are potential areas of self employment and entrepreneurship development in fisheries. With Masters in Fisheries, one can be appointed as assistant professor in the faculty of fisheries and with doctorate one can be recruited as scientists in various agricultural and fisheries institutions. Recruitment to these positions are by the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB) through a nation-wide competitive examination followed by a personal interview. Private research companies in India and abroad are also entering into this field with large investments.
