What is the scope of MBA in IT?

MBA in Information Technology aims at developing Management professionals for IT & ITES Businesses and its specialized streams. The programme builds Management skills and reinforces IT skills to create Leaders, Managers & Entrepreneurs in IT products & services domain. MBA IT programme provides students knowledge and skills in all management functions with specialization in concepts on Software Engineering, Software project Management, RDBMS, Emerging IT technologies with in depth knowledge in any one of the niche areas such as Information Security Management (ISM), IT Infrastructure Management, Software Solutions Management, Systems Engineering, Business Analysis and Data Analyst etc. MBA IT prepare grads for Pre-Sales support, Account Management, Sales Management, Project Management and Business Analysis roles in IT & ITES industry. But MBA IT grads compete with normal MBA from good colleges for these roles. At the start of career MBA IT is better paid then technical resources but in long run both careers are equally good and paying. Fresh MBA grads get salary between Rs 5 Lacs to 18 Lacs per annum based on Institute and profile.

As per my knowledge, MBA can open a wide range of opportunities in information technology. Some of them are as follows: 1. After MBA a person can become a business analyst (however even engineers from top engineering colleges can become that). 2. Technology/digital consulting is another field where knowledge of business processes, concepts of financial modeling, business strategy, and exposure to information technology can help a person to succeed. 3. Pre-sales, sales, and account manager profiles are quite frequently offered by information technology firms in MBA colleges to students with backgrounds in information technology. 4. Some companies offer the role of application delivery manager to people with work experience in IT and MBA from top b-schools. 5. Role of project manager and programme manager are other profiles in IT that a person can get after MBA. 6.
