What is the scope of mechanical engineering?

Mechanical engineering is the discipline that applies the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines. Mechanical engineers are employed in operations and maintenance roles in manufacturing and services industry. It is an evergreen branch with no cyclic trend in the job market. Mechanical engineering graduates are employed in almost every sector of the industries in the engineering roles. Mechanical engineering grads are employed in operation and maintenance, production control and management, design, machines installation, tester, quality engineering, etc. Some of the largest areas of employment of mechanical engineers are productions, machine tools, railway engineering, aerospace, the automobile industry, power plants, armed forces and paramilitary forces.

Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest branches of engineering. It is also referred to as the mother branch of engineering. Mechanical engineers have to deal with concepts such as mechanics, thermodynamics, robotics, kinematics, structural analysis, fluid mechanics and many others. These concepts are applied in the process of designing state-of-the-art manufacturing units. The scope is divided into a number of streams. 1) Designing (R&D phase research such as nanotechnology, development of composite materials, biomedical applications, environmental conservation, etc.). Mechanical engineers also contribute to the development of various engines, power plant equipment, heating and cooling systems and other simple and complex machinery. 2) Supervision i.e you supervise technician and tradesman so that manufacturing chain does not stop. Handling critical tasks (they are also responsible for testing, maintaining and manufacturing them). 3) Actually, if you join a manufacturing company like L&T, Cars Manuf or other mechanical parts. In that company, everything is automated, you have to take care of I) Quality checks ii) Monitoring of Production chain if chain stucks, you have to resolve it. 4) Govt. sector: You can join any govt. organisation and do execute tasks on the rocket engine, missiles, etc., in DRDO, ISRO, BHEL, BEL or you can join as a section engineer in Indian Railways, so many sub-parts of section engineer in track, loco, signals, etc. 5) If you do Master's degree and Ph.D, you can join as a professor in any college with a good monthly salary. 6) In some organizations, they will send you as a support engineer on the client side. Suppose a company build a manufacturing chain for cars. Now, you will send to that manufacturing company so that their chain will run smoothly. 1. Automobile and auto part manufacturers 2.
