The selection process for B.Tech in India typically involves two stages:-
Stage 1:- Entrance Exams
There are several national and state-level entrance exams for B.Tech admissions in India. The most popular ones include:-
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main:- Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), JEE Main is the gateway for admission to NITs, IIITs, CFTIs and other engineering colleges. It is held twice a year (January and April).
Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main
JEE Advanced:- Conducted by one of the seven IITs on a rotational basis, JEE Advanced is for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). It is held once a year in May.

State level Engineering Entrance Exams:- Several states conduct their own entrance exams for B.Tech admissions in colleges within the state. Some of the popular state level exams include WBJEE (West Bengal), MHT CET (Maharashtra), KCET (Karnataka) and Andhra Pradesh EAMCET (Andhra Pradesh).
Stage 2:- Counselling and Seat Allotment
Based on the entrance exam scores candidates participate in counselling rounds to secure admission to B.Tech programs. The counselling process is conducted by different authorities depending on the exam taken. For example for JEE Main the counselling is conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JOSAA).
During counselling, candidates are given choices of B.Tech programs and colleges based on their rank in the entrance exam. Seats are then allotted based on the candidate's rank programme preferences and seat availability.
Minimum JEE Score Required
The minimum JEE score required for B.Tech admission varies depending on several factors such as:-
Entrance Exam:- The cut-off scores for JEE Main and JEE Advanced are different. Generally the cutoff scores for JEE Advanced are much higher than those for JEE Main.
Program and College:- The cut-off scores for different B.Tech programs and colleges also vary. Popular programs and colleges have higher cutoff scores.
Category:- There are different categories for candidates, such as General, OBC, SC and ST. The cutoff scores for each category may differ.
Here are some general guidelines for the minimum JEE score required for B.Tech admission:-
JEE Main:- To qualify for JEE Advanced you need to score at least the qualifying percentile in JEE Main. For the January 2023 session the qualifying percentile for General category was 90.38.
JEE Advanced: To secure admission to a good B.Tech programme in an IIT you need to score a rank within the top 20,000.
State level Exams:- The minimum score required for state level exams also varies depending on the factors mentioned above. However it is generally lower than the cutoff scores for JEE Main and JEE Advanced.
It is important to remember that the minimum score is just a guideline. Your chances of getting admission to a good B.Tech programme depend on your rank relative to other candidates.
