After getting approval from the federal government, Annamalai University became the first and the oldest institution of higher learning in India to offer remote learning courses. The university has a Directorate of Distance Education that offers various courses for students who cannot attend regular classes. It has a sprawling campus of nearly 1000 acres, making it one of the largest residential universities in Southern Asia.
