Admission requirements differ from one university to another. Universities look at academic background, SAT scores, TOEFL/IELTS score, etc. for admission consideration. He should target 75%+ for an average university.

For a decent university, a student must ideally have 70%+ in class 10th and 12th. This is followed by a good SAT score. However, people with low grades can target a good SAT score to compensate their low academics. I hope this helps.
