IIT, Mumbai is without a doubt the best of all IIT's. All IIT's were established to produce quality engineers who would help in industrialization of India. This was the thought. Just a few years after this, government Of India felt that India needs design capabilities too else we would be left with copying design of others. Obviously the choice fell on IIT Mumbai. Industrial Design Centre was established. This helped produce those experts who could design products, factories etc. In the initial years this was the only place where design experts were produced.
