What qualities am I supposed to have to become an animator? Is it necessary for me to know how to draw well?

Aruna, Yes. 3D Animators usually have a good drawing skill. However, there have been some who had good understanding of acting. There are also many paths in this field that do not rely on drawing, like VFX, game GUI, 3D modelling. If you're creative, you can always consider going for Design and Animation. This is a field where nobody cares for your qualification, they only see if you can do quality work. In fact, the University Model has not succeeded in any Skill field across the world. A good mentor and wise selection of courses with a good school, followed by diligent learning, would get you a head start in your career. However, you must check your suitability for this field. Animation is an art form and a very demanding career. It has ample opportunities for the creatively talented people. Opportunities lie in UI Design, Graphic Design, Storyboarding, Animation Design, Game Design, 3D Modelling, Texturing and Lighting, Dynamics and VFX and of course animation (2D and 3D). Of course at the top of the pile lies Concept Designing - these people are required by Event Companies, Animation Studios, VFX Studios, and of course Game Studios. However, choosing between these must be done after seeing your performance in each of these. So going for a generic course covering all or most of these would be the best way to get started in these careers. Typically, you should have good sketching skills to be able to make a sound career in this (if you work hard you can improve your drawing skills tremendously). Nothing but your innermost talent and passion should lead you to the course and the institute you choose. Aruna S, Take the creative subjects or arts or languages. I would recommend that as you study for your 10+2, you start practicing sketching to begin with. Try to observe things closely and sketch them. You can also buy good sketch books from the market for sketching including shading, shadows, and human figures. However, soon you may have to upgrade to more serious books like "The Animator's Survival Kit" by Richards William. Psychology and Literature are two useful subjects. Try to participate in writing, drawing/ painting, sports, dramatics, music, singing etc. whatever is possible for you. If any good Life Art or Method Art Classes are available in your neighborhood, then take those classes (if you are near Chandigarh, then I can recommend some). Later on, you may take up a course in Multimedia and animation or in design and graphics. Animation draws the best out of a Creative Person. It offers a person to indulge in music, design, acting, direction, camera, voice design, character design etc. Wish you the best for your career.
