What qualities am I supposed to have to become an animator? Is it necessary for me to know how to draw well?

Yes. 3D Animators usually have a good drawing skill. However, there have been some who had good understanding of acting. There are also many paths in this field that do not rely on drawing, like VFX, game GUI, 3D modelling. If you're creative, you can always consider going for Design and Animation. This is a field where nobody cares for your qualification, they only see if you can do quality work.

Take the creative subjects or arts or languages. I would recommend that as you study for your 10+2, you start practicing sketching to begin with. Try to observe things closely and sketch them. You can also buy good sketch books from the market for sketching including shading, shadows, and human figures.
However, soon you may have to upgrade to more serious books like "The Animator's Survival Kit" by Richards William. Psychology and Literature are two useful subjects. Try to participate in writing, drawing/ painting, sports, dramatics, music, singing etc. whatever is possible for you.
