What qualities and skills should one possess to become a critic?

You may be thinking that you would make a good critic. Perhaps you would; however, willingness to work hard, along with a bit of luck, are also necessary. In fact, enjoying your subject area is one of several necessary skills a critic must possess. Critics attempt to capture the experience and relate that experience to readers, viewers or listeners. Some of the qualities required by critics are: Broad subject Knowledge Critics must also have a working knowledge minute details so that they can intelligently discuss the minute details. Writing or Presentation Skills They must communicate their experiences to their audiences. Although no formal education or degrees are required to become a critic, some aspiring critics pursue degrees in journalism or broadcasting to obtain the skills they need. Critics for magazines and newspapers must be able to communicate their knowledge and appreciation through the written word. On the other hand, critics for radio and television must be able to convey their experiences through their spoken words. Discretion and Objectivity Although many critics have wide name recognition, they almost never show their faces when they write or broadcast reviews. A critic has the knowledge of all the things that he/she is writing about, knowing the background of the subject is the first and foremost thing required for a person to become a critic. You must always stay neutral to your opinions and views as your one word may lead to some disaster in the world of people who believe their ears more than their own eyes. You should not be writing very positive or negative about whatsoever topic you are going to deliver. You must check the pros and cons with the truthiness of the facts and figures that has been received by you, they need to be correct and appropriate all the times. Your write-ups must always contain the right amount of information that is 5W's + 1H that would be very convenient for your audience to understand your views. You should always think logically and should always be ready for any sort of reasoning that might be crossed questioned to you. Your confidence can only be judged on how well you understand your subject which will automatically lead to gain confidence from the public or be ready to lose your importance as the competition these days are very high and people will find many ways to put you down in front of others.

Active Listening-One must give a full attention to what other people are saying, take time to understand the points being made, asking appropriate questions, and not interrupt at the inappropriate times. Writing-Communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience. Speaking-Talking to others to convey information effectively. Critical Thinking-Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems. Social Perceptiveness-Being aware of others reactions and understanding why they react as they do. Active Learning-Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making. Time Management-Managing one's own time and the time of others. Complex Problem Solving-Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions. Monitoring-Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations to make improvements or take corrective action. Persuasion-Persuading others to change their minds or behaviour. Judgment and Decision Making-Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
