Software is related to IT industries. And, IT sector is a knowledge industry. If you have in depth knowledge you are paid more, no matter you belong to simple graduate or engineer. The value of the position is measured by your knowledge. You can still manage to become a software developer with your fair skills and knowledge, but value of your package will be moderate.
