It is suggested that you appear for GATE and also plan to appear for Indian Engineering Services Examination conducted by UPSC. If you able to crack IES you go for it because it's the best career option for an engineer. If you able to crack GATE you will get a good job in PSU.

IES is best of all it is to be a gadgetted officer in Central government.

If you cracked UPSC ESE then definitely join as IES. Or if you are preparing then give both GATE and UPSC ESE your first priority should be IES then any PSU job.
