You can start your self studies and preparations now itself. After one year you assess your preaprations, strengths and weaknesses. Based on your strengths and weaknesses analysis you can decide about taking coaching for XAT in 4th year of your engineering degree.

I suggest you write a mock CAT to figure out your strengths and weak areas. Depending on your score you can figure out when to start preparing.
