Madras Medical College dates back to 1664 when it was founded as the Government General Hospital to treat the sick soldiers of the East India Company. In 1857 it got Affiliated to University of Madras
Its Department of Geriatric Medicine was established in April 1978 by Dr. V. S. Natarajan MD with the aim of providing comprehensive health care to senior citizens.
