Hello, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering or "AME" is a training programme that imparts training to students on how to maintain aircraft so that they are safe to fly. There are two streams in this. One is mechanical stream and the other is avionics stream. This training runs for about three years. There are lots of practicals in the course and all the institutions try to give it on real aircraft or dummy. These colleges are spread across length and breadth of India. There is no unbiased agency that is carrying out independent assessment and hence it's most difficult to pin point best or the worst colleges. It is advised that the student should select the one in a place nearer to his home and after filtering out, try to compare select few before deciding to take admission. It is felt that thus is the best approach rather than giving a list of colleges.

Hi, Aircraft maintenance engineering is not a degree or a Diploma course, but a training programme. On completion of the training, a license is issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). During the training, lessons are imparted for service and maintenance of aircraft so as to ensure flight safety. A 3-year aircraft maintenance engineering license training course is being offered by several institutes approved by the DGCA. Those who have passed the +2 examinations with 50% marks in aggregate in physics, chemistry and mathematics or a 3-year Diploma course in any branch of engineering or B.Sc degree holders after +2 with maths, physics and chemistry are eligible for admission to AME training courses. There is no gender discrimination in admission. Boys and girls can seek admission. This training course in rigorous and only a few institutes offer training on heavy aircraft and jet engines. Total training cost will be around Rs.1.5 lakh. The first year of AME training provides basic information about aircraft rules and regulations. In the second year, students learn general engineering and maintenance. The subjects taught include aerodynamics or theory of flight, metallurgy, electronics, handling sophisticated equipment and practical work in machine rooms and on aircraft engines. In the third year, the study focuses on specific areas like light aircraft, heavy aircraft, piston engines, jet engines or helicopters. Apart from this, trainees are required to undergo structural aircraft type courses in mechanical or avionics stream. After successful completion of the training programme, the trainees will get a basic aircraft maintenance training certificate. This is followed by an examination conducted by the DGCA. Those who qualify the examination will be awarded a license. The 3-year training is sufficient for a candidate to appear for the aircraft maintenance licensing examinations. After getting the DGCA- AME license, one is required to obtain regulatory license or approval on a type of aircraft. Aviation is a booming sector in India and with the rise of budget and newer full service airlines, there also has been an increased demand of aviation related workforce in the recent years. With airlines like Indigo alone having more than 150 aircrafts with more than 600 on order, the demand for new AMEs is every increasing for the regular servicing and maintenance of these huge fleets of various airlines. There are about 36 top class institutes in India famous for their Aircraft maintenance engineering courses and it would be difficult to choose a single best one so I will list a few from Delhi and Mumbai. The TIAT or the Thakur Institute of Aviation Technology is a government. recognized institute in Mumbai which is quite famous for its various aviation related courses. They have state of the art classrooms and one of the industry's best instructors training their students and they also have an arrangement with many airlines for in-house interviews. Then there is the JRN Institute of Aviation Technology in New Delhi which is well known for their use of the latest technology in Aircraft Maintenance and they churn out excellent AMEs in great numbers every year. Another noteworthy institute down south would be Visveswaraya Institute of Aviation in Kottayam which generates quality engineers every year and are well known in the aviation engineering circles.
