The cheapest cities are mostly in eastern Germany. Top ones include:

  • Chemnitz (often the cheapest)
  • Magdeburg
  • Halle (Saale)
  • Leipzig
  • Dresden
  • Jena
  • Erfurt

In these places, total monthly living costs for a student are often €650–€900. This is much lower than Munich (€1,100–€1,500) or Berlin (€900–€1,200).
