You cannot answer the question with certainty as the important topics keep changing year to year. But, topics from which questions invariably are asked year on year include: 1. Quantitative Ability: Algebra, Number system (very important), sets, PnC and probability. About 3-5 questions on geometry are also asked every year. Trigonometry can be skipped. Do learn tricks like divisibility rules to solve question on remainder etc. 2. Data Interpretation- Pie chart- learn calculation techniques for pi chart, bar graphs and scatterplots. Vedic maths helps in DI as the sets here are time consuming. 3. VA/LR- Do practice syllogisms and RC. Reading speed is important. Read passages from different genres to have a better idea of the range of questions. Barrons top 1000 words for Vocabulary is a must as it helps in fill in the blanks and para completion. Basic grammar questions 4. A must do is to solve past 5 year questions of CAT

CAT is an exam where your basics need to be strong. They will ask you questions anyhow by combining two topics together or putting up a single topic example in a unique and different way. The main topics that a student should prepare would be time distance, time speed, probability, ages, dice, ratio and proportions, etc., from Quants. Verbal is considered to be the most difficult area in CAT exam as you need to have a strong hold on English language i.e you must be having a very good vocabulary, grammar should be perfect, etc. For Reasoning, your focus should be on matrix puzzles, coding-decoding, sequential output, etc. You need to be very strong in verbal and reasoning to crack CAT as these are the two main sections where you can score more than others if you practice well. So, start with basics as those are the most important ones.

The most important topics to focus on CAT Fundamentals/ Number systems. Nearly 10 questions are asked from this chapter. So, give maximum time to this chapter. Time speed and distance-2 questions (moderate to hard) Time and work-1 question (easy) PNC, probability-3 questions compulsory (moderate) Logarithms-2 questions (easiest of the lot). Note that one of these questions may be included in number systems. Profit, loss and discounts-12 questions (moderate) CI/SI-12 questions (easy to moderate) Percentages-Don't leave this chapter as it is very beneficial to solve the DI questions. Note-I suggest you not to give too much time on geometry. Although 34 questions will surely be coming from geometry, it is a vast syllabus. It takes a lot of time to completely grasp the understanding of the different patterns of questions. So, if you are good at it then only go for it. It is advisable to leave it. Wish you luck. The Data Interpretation (DI) section and the Logical Reasoning (LR) section are pretty standard and unforeseeable at the same time. Standard because in DI, the questions will for sure be based on graphs, pie charts and tables and the questions will be very data and calculation intensive. In LR, the questions are based on linear and circular arrangements, sequencing, family relations, etc. Quantitative Ability (QA) consists of a variety of 10th grade maths questions with increased tricks to trap you. The questions will be based on Algebra, number systems, geometry, probability, P&C etc. Verbal Ability (VA) will consist of majorly Reading Comprehension questions with passages from various topics, Critical Reasoning questions, Paragraph rearrangement etc. Make sure you practice mock tests in a timed and religious manner. Practice mental calculations a lot.

The syllabus of CAT includes all the topics till 10th level maths. However, the tricks help you solve them accurately and quickly. Analysis of the last 5-10 years of CAT papers will help you know the important topics to focus on. In my opinion and experience, DI and LR are pretty unforeseeable. DI consist of standard Bar graphs, pie charts, tables and data intensive questions and LR consists of arrangements, sequence, family relation questions. Verbal mostly consists of Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions and paragraph rearrangement questions. Quantitative Analysis has a variety of questions on Numbers, Algebra, Word problems, Work, Geometry, Probability etc. Speed and accuracy plays a very important role while preparing for CAT. This requires intensive practice and focus. Timed tests will help analyse your strengths and weaknesses and help you prepare better.

CAT preparation is not a single aspect but aspirants must see in multiple directions. They should primarily focus on Quantitative techniques, not just solving them but speed with accuracy is required in solving the problems. You can increase your ability by solving the old papers and numerous problems.
