Which branch of engineering should I opt for in B.Tech? Is CSE deemed to be the best engineering branch?

Mechanical engineering is called the ever green branch as Mechanical Engineers find suitable placements in almost all segments in industry. Streams in demand include electronics and communication engineering, computer science and engineering, applied electronics and instrumentation, electrical and electronics and so on as traditional streams. There are sector specific and new generation streams like mechatronics, automobile, aeronautics, cybersecurity, nano technology, etc. which are capturing demand. IT is found to be recession dependent so far. Considering trends in growth in industry, Electronics and Computer Science streams seem to have good prospects in future.

There are four core branches of engineering i.e. mechanical, chemical, civil and electrical engineering. Each of these branches have developed into specialised sub branches. The number of engineering degrees available have increased dramatically. For example, electrical engineering is further divided in specializations such as electronics, instrumentation, telecommunication, computer science, information technology, etc. Mechanical engineering also has specializations such production, aeronautical, etc. Chemical engineering is further divided in petrochemical, polymer technology, etc. Civil engineering is divided in material science and engineering, construction engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, etc. Nowadays, there are a few multidisciplinary engineering such as biotechnology, mining engineering. Medical electronics, bioinformatics, mechtronics, automation, etc. Trends on various engineering branches scope and opportunities varies with multiple parameters such as economic growth, geo politics, innovation and technology changes, shortage of skills, quality of education, changes social capital, etc. Therefore, predicting trends is very difficult. Currently scope for B.Tech CSE and ECE graduates is highest. Mechanical engineering is evergreen branch of engineering with not much change in scope in last 5 decades. You must chose branch of engineering based on your interests to excel in professional life.
