Canada is good with a very vibrant industrial and technological base. It takes a bit of hard work to become a registered engineer in Canada, but the rewards are worth the effort. The path is somewhat circuitous, though. Your chances of getting a job is purely a function of:
    You educational level.
Your references practical background in the field.
Your status as an engineer. Your language proficiency in French and/or English.

Hello,I would suggest Canada is a better country to pursue mechanical engineering. To get into Canada, one need to have excellent academic scores of above 70 percent. You need to appear for IELTS or TOEFL along with GRE exam.

Both the countries are almost same. But, from my side I would recommend you to go to Germany. Germany is such a place which is known for automobile sector. So you can perform pretty well as compared to both the countries.

You simply cannot compare two countries by asking which is best for mechanical engineering. Australia education system is sure to be of high standard than Canada for sure. However, the cost of studies in Australia is very high than Canada, You have to decide the country based on the following four factors.
    1. Cost of tuition fees and living expenses
    2. Duration of the course - visa period
    3. Earning capacity by doing part time job
    4. Post study stay back options
Whatever the university offer Ph.D in mechanical engineering, you can select that because normally Ph.D is sponsored programme and unless some industry sponsors they cannot offer P
