Which engineering branch is better in terms of career prospects: marine engineering or mechanical engineering?

Marine Engineering is niche branch with job opportunities in shipping and shipping based ancillary industries only. Mechanical Engineer are required by all types of industries therefore have a very large job market. I suggest you opt for Mechanical Engineering now. If your interests remain in Merchant Navy, you can do one year course after mechanical engineering to join Merchant Navy as Marine engineer.
