Both the syllabus are competitive, in VTU and autonomous. However, some of the autonomous colleges have challenging subjects content with more exposure on field trips and hands on projects. Example, PESIT has a really good autonomous syllabus. In VTU, all the subjects and evaluation are under the wing of VTU and choice of reading selected number of topics across subjects gives it flexibility.
