Hi Serena, First of all, let's see what these branches are all about. Biomedical engineers typically do the following:
Design biomedical equipment and devices, such as artificial internal organs, replacements for body parts, and machines for diagnosing medical problems. Plastics engineering encompasses the processing, design, development, and manufacture of plastics products. A plastic is a polymeric material that is in a semi-liquid state, having the property of plasticity and exhibiting flow. Plastics engineering encompasses plastics material and plastic machinery. Although they somewhat relate to chemistry or chemical engineering, t...more -
Biomedical engineering:
Will be a huge help with understanding what went into the engineering of surgical equipment. From the pulse oximeter monitoring the patient's vitals to the tools you operate with, you understand why it works to some extent. You'll possibly have a better theoretical understanding of how the body works at a thermodynamics level and certainly will look at the body itself from an engineering perspective. This may well make physiology more intuitive to you. You may need a few extra courses for medical school applying because you may not get enough, or the right, chemistry and biology.
