Which thing matters the most in converting IIM calls?

There are various things that matter while the IIMs or any other B-School in India look for in a prospective candidate:
1) Strong academic knowledge: May or may not be related to your grades but the application of concepts is very important
2) Verbal and written communication Skills: Gauged through a comprehensive process of GD/What and Personal Interview.
3) Extra-Curricular Activities: It is expected that a student must be shown some amount of engagement in activities other than academics.

Preparation can be three types: Self, Self plus coaching, Coaching,
It depends on whether you are working or a student. So, if you are working you have to prepare either by self-using the correspondence booklets or you can take option of taking weekend coaching classes or you can buy some famous books used for preparation of MBA entrance exams. I got a call from new IIMs and my profile and CAT score was the following:
CAT 97.97
Xth -77.33
XIIth-78.4
Graduation -71%
Date of interview- 6th March 2013.
The twist in the tail was I got rejected by NMIMS few days earlier inspite of a fabulous interview so was a bit dejected.
How I prepared: I wrote about 2-3 passages daily giving myself 15-20 min. for each, the topic were searched from various coaching center websites.
Read more essays from internet and built up the content. Both of these started once I got my CAT result on 9th Jan 2013.
For interview, gave lot of mocks and built my answer to "Why MBA?".

All IIMs have different criteria for admission. While CAT score is a very important component in the selection process it is not the only thing considered. For the initial shortlist for the Interview apart from CAT score they look at your past academic performance. A consistently good academic record is what they are looking for. 2) Nature of the question.
3) Read newspaper and magazine to build knowledge about the current affairs.
4) Essay writing skills as you would be given a topic on the spot and you have to write it in 10 mins.
5) During the time of Personal Interview (PI) be confident while answering.
6) During PI be well dressed and you should look smart in your formals, if you have beards then it should be in shape and size so that it suits you.

Many factors decide whether you will get admitted into IIM or not.
Start with What and GD preparation. What is written ability test and consists of writing a short essay in around 10-15 minutes on a topic given on spot. The topics mostly are related to current social issues. So you must be familiar to all the current happenings. So make a habit of reading newspapers regularly. You should also practise essay writing, for getting good at it make sure to read editorials or articles from good sources like The Hindu. This will help you understand how data should be oraganised and presented properly.

7 years agoDo your research on the type of topics that are usually assessed in the What/GD rounds of the particular institute are the topics factual in nature, or based on controversies, are they abstract or do you need to analyze a case study? Also, understand the nature of questions asked at the interviews over the past few years- is there a pattern to it. Now, make a list of action points that you need to work on to ace the What/GDs.

The answer to this question is something that would differ from person to person because it is all about perspective. It is all about point of view.
Some would say that the knowledge of the subject matters the most.
Some would say communication is the skill to do it.
Some consider the knowledge of current affairs to be the key, as you will be able to answer any question out of the blue.
With regards to the "Group Discussion" round, some find the "Courtesy" works.
Whereas some feel that "aggression" will get you through.
