illiam Barton Rogers. Although classes in MIT University began in 1865, the university was granted its official charter by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts back on April 10, 1861. Hence, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology USA considers its founding year to be 1861. It was June 1916 when MIT moved to its current location in Cambridge.
