Fort Valley State University was mainly founded by a group of former slaves including Davison, Virgil Gideon Barnett, Peter Fann, Henry Lowman, Thomas McAfee, James Isaac Miller, Charlie H. Nixon, and Thomas W. Williams. They were some of the first graduate students at the university and had completed so by 1902 after establishment.
