I can talk about mechanical engineering as I am not sure about the civil branch.
Mechanical engineering opens up a vast ocean of opportunities to anyone who opts for it.
In mechanical, there are many sub branches which have many jobs to offer:
    Aerospace
    Mechatronics
    Marine
    Metallurgy
    Production/Industrial
    Automobile
    Manufacturing
Mechanical engineers can work in these fields also:
    Biomedical
    Operation
    Transport
    Shipping
    Nanotechnology
    The main sub fields include:
    Thermofluids
    Solid mechanics
    Systems dynamics (Dynamics and controls)
    Heat transfer
    Energy systems
    Biomechanics
    Product design
    Material science
    Nanotechnology

Mechanical and civil engineering is believed to be the oldest branch of engineering. After independence country needed factory, skilled labor, dams, bridge which was possible by these two engineers. These branches are considered as evergreen as their demand never goes down because the work they do is useful for centuries. At the time of development, Indian government firstly think on these things. After 90s India want development in software and IT sector then demand of mechanical and civil slump. But never forget when apocalypse come only these two helps us.
They work to design our basic need such as machine, cars, chips, spare parts,

Mechanical and civil engineering are the branches of engineering that have existed ever since engineering has existed. In comparison the other branches of engineering are relatively new and came into existence much later as and when the need arose. So, in some ways, Mechanical and Civil can also be called "Traditional Engineering".
The more important piece also is that other branches of engineering have seen large fluctuations in their demand from the industry. During last 10-15 years Computer Science saw high demand which now seems to be tapering off, likewise for other branches such as - Electronics, Electrical, Chemical, etc.

Mechanical Engineering and civil engineering are subconsciously the branches of engineering that have been with the humans since the beginning. The invention of the wheel was a breakthrough in ME. And with the primitives learning how to make homes and bridges, they were the first civil engineers. I think you got the point.
Now talking in technical terms, mechanical engineering and civil engineering are branches that deal with the engineering of the basic needs of life. We have and always will use machines to ease off the loads on ourselves and the machines are dealt by mechanical engineers. Also, we always shall, no matter what happens
