There was a study which concluded that a small budget Airline can save up to INR. 3 Crores a year, if they have an all-female cabin crew instead of a mixed cabin crew. The reason for this is that a female cabin crew would weigh on an average 20 kilos lighter than a male cabin crew and as a result, would save on fuel consumption in the long run.
As a result, many cash-strapped no-frills budget airlines in India such as Indigo Airlines, Go Air, Spice Jet and Air Asia only hire female cabin crew. Since time immemorial only air hostesses were hired as cabin crew by airlines. Hiring of male cabin crew is a recent phenomenon. There are plenty of reasons for this scenario. We need not go into the history. But in modern times, it's simple economics that dominates the world of aviation.
