Saving of fuel is of course one of the primary reason for hiring female as compared to male due to weight difference.
And, it also depends on airline to airline, as they have their own way of hiring people.

Hello,
Since time immemorial only air hostesses were hired as cabin crew by airlines. Hiring of male cabin crew is a recent phenomenon. There are plenty of reasons for this scenario. We need not go into the history. But in modern times, it's simple economics that dominates the world of aviation.
