Why are there substantially less male stewards as opposed to female stewardesses on any national or international career?

There was a study which concluded that a small budget Airline can save up to INR. 3 Crores a year, if they have an all-female cabin crew instead of a mixed cabin crew. The reason for this is that a female cabin crew would weigh on an average 20 kilos lighter than a male cabin crew and as a result, would save on fuel consumption in the long run. As a result, many cash-strapped no-frills budget airlines in India such as Indigo Airlines, Go Air, Spice Jet and Air Asia only hire female cabin crew. This helps them save a huge amount of money in the long run. The above calculation is true for a fleet of just 15 aircrafts, so airlines like Indigo who already have 150+ aircrafts currently, save a lot of money every year by not hiring male cabin crew. This method has also been utilized to a great extent by other low cost Asian airlines. For guys looking to join the aviation industry, there are still airlines like Air India, Vistara and Jet Airways who regularly hire male stewards. There are also tons of ground staff jobs a guy could join.

Saving of fuel is of course one of the primary reason for hiring female as compared to male due to weight difference. And, it also depends on airline to airline, as they have their own way of hiring people.

Hello, Since time immemorial only air hostesses were hired as cabin crew by airlines. Hiring of male cabin crew is a recent phenomenon. There are plenty of reasons for this scenario. We need not go into the history. But in modern times, it's simple economics that dominates the world of aviation. According to one study, there are two reasons for more females as cabin crew as compared with males. Females weigh less than males. This results in airlines able to carry that much more cargo and thus earning more. There is one more reason. It has been observed that there is more attrition in case of female cabin crew as compared with males due to number of reasons. Thus airlines continue to hire freshers who are obviously paid less. Thus airlines again save money. In conclusion one can say that employment of females or males as cabin crew is almost entirely dictated by economic terms and nothing else.
