Why aren't placements for mechanical engineering good now a days? I took mechanical in BITS, Goa. How can I get the best salary package?

Don't worry about placement as you are in one of the best private colleges of India so just study well and try to score good marks in your semester exams and you get placed easily.

Placements depend on student efforts, exposure, and skills which he has gained during his graduation period.
