Why cations are smaller and anions larger in radii than their parent?

A cation is a positively charged ion. It means it has less number of electrons than the parent. So, the nuclear pull (protons in nucleus attracting electrons) is distributed over less number of electrons leading to higher pull and the cation being smaller. The case is opposite case for anion.
