Why do people choose a particular job or career?

Let’s talk about normal scenario prevalent in India about 5 to 10 years back : Education stream was decided by parents First internship was forced by college First job was decided by college Further job changes were decided by circumstances. Sounds familiar? Yes, this is pretty much the scenario all across India since last few generations. People used go to lengths to ensure this. I have seen a old man professing that his new born grand daughter will become a great Doctor! But there is a big change in how we have started thinking as a society although in a underwhelming numbers. Now students start thinking on professional lines starting from school level itself. During my interactions with students all across the country, a good number of them have questions for career choices, options, skill attainment, aptitude, interest and many more. I have also written else where on how to make informed career choice. The basics for making this choice are: Interest : Make a wise choice, chose the one which can be commercialized. Now, how to choose college: Check whether: Does it have a course of your choice? And is the course curriculum developed dynamically to cater to industry needs. Does the university have required infrastructure like labs, libraries, equipment, software to support the training. Does the university have the qualified and high quality research based culture and competent faculty. Does the university have diversity of students? It is necessary for developing right sensibilities, cross cultural team work and interpersonal skills. Does the university train you not only in required skills but also in professional enhancement? Does the university give language training? Does the university have industry connect? Does the university have the PLACEMENTS? Co-Curricular activities events for developing overall personality and networking skills? Does the university provide exposure to students via regular industry interactions, visits, internships, etc. Does the university have international collaborations for enhanced international exposure to students? Does the university have strong alumni network? This is one of the most important ones, if the Alumni of university is happy and connected to their Alma mater, it means it has done a great job.

The career is our life. We spend most of our waking hours in office, so it is the most important part of our lives. We should choose a career that interests us if we want to keep ourselves happy. Being a faculty of LPU let me tell you LPU offers over 250 programs in various disciplines. Coming to infrastructure, the 1200 acre campus which is equipped with every machinery, equipment, and software required in all the s is a wonder in itself, just, for example, more than 10 companies have established centers for excellence within the campus with their investment to keep an eye on the abundant talent! The central library is one massive 6 story building with lacs of books and a network to produce any title anytime! And this is in addition to many other libraries in all the departments. Industry plays an important part in shaping the careers of students at LPU, from consulting for curriculum to guest lectures, industry interface, internships, consulting projects, establishing centers, providing machinery and equipment, software, certifications and finally immersing the students from campus. Attracting 30000 plus students, 200 international universities, and more than 600 companies from all over the world to its state of the art multicultural campus year after year after year speaks volumes about LPU.
